Union Canal The above pictures show the locks on the 1.3km long extension to the Union canal on the south side of the Edinburgh - Glasgow rail line. Work started early in 2000 on this major project which will result in the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals being reconnected again in December 2001. This will involve cutting 1.3km of new Union Canal containing two locks, building a low-level rural aqueduct, a tunnel and then a high-level aqueduct, leading to the Wheel boatlift. A holding basin will be provided at the bottom of the Wheel and a Visitor Centre is being constructed at the side of the basin.
