Originally there were greenhouses against the walls growing pineapples, heated from the building.

A quiet residential area now, but for 200 years one of the largest lime production facilities
in the UK until it closed in the 1950s.

The red building holds Edinburgh's Fishmarket and is still in use, but much of the rest of this
shoreline is being re-developed, as a fashionable residential area.

Traditionally the sun is used to extract salt from sea-water in giant pans, using a series of canals, ponds, and evaporation.

Apr 10: Castillo de Guanapay, Teguise, Lanzarote.
Built on the rim of an extinct volcano, the 16C castle guards the ancient capital of Lanzarote,
which can be seen in the valley behind the castle.

Apr 11: Castillo de San Gabriel, Lanzarote.
Built to defend Arrecife Harbour in the 16C, but soon destroyed by Algerian Pirates and rebuilt.
Used for military purposes until the 1950s, and now a museum.

May 3: Salt Pans, St. Monans, East Neuk of Fife.
Local coal was used to boil seawater pumped into special buildings by the windmill.
Not very green at 8 tonnes of coal per tonne of salt!

Originally the main tower was topped with a proper light room with copper roof,
todays automatic lights on a mast are a poor substitute.
